Obituary for Leonard Raymond Zuchowski

Leonard Raymond Zuchowski, age 97, died peacefully at home on July 6th, 2019. Len was born in Metuchen N.J. on May 17, 1922. He graduated from Newark Central High School in 1940. Immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, 19 year old Len enlisted in the Marine Corps. For the next 4 years he served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific Theater earning 5 Battle Stars for participating in the 3 Guadalcanal Campaigns, the Peleliu Campaign, and the Cape Gloucester Campaign. As a member of the 1st Marine Division Recon Team he was awarded 2 Presidential Unit Citations, the American Campaign Medal, the Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the WW II Victory Medal, and the N.J. Distinguished Service Medal.
Upon his return to civilian life after the war he married his high school sweetheart Irene Kassay in 1945. Together they moved to Fanwood, N.J. in 1954 where they raised their two little girls, Carol and Jeanne. For the next 62 years Len was a fixture in the Fanwood community where he devoted 55 years to the Fanwood Volunteer Fire Department. Professionally, Lenny rose to manage the New Brunswick Office of William Bruckmann Insurance Co. eventually retiring in 1986.
Len was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Irene and his daughter Carol Simon. He is survived by his daughter Jeanne DiNicola of Seattle, Wa., his 3 grandchildren Eric Simon, Matthew DiNicola, and Leslie DiNicola and his 2 great grandchildren, Zara Simon and Zack Simon.
Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Thursday from 1-2pm at the Bradley Funeral Home Rt. 73 and Evesham Rd. Marlton where a Funeral Service will be held at 2pm Thursday. Interment will be private.
